Lymphedema Therapy at Carlisle Place
Lymphedema occurs when the lymphatic system is unable to effectively transport lymph fluid back into circulation, leading to swelling—most commonly in the arms or legs. There are two types of lymphedema:
-
Primary Lymphedema: caused by a congenital or hereditary issue within the lymphatic system
-
Secondary Lymphedema: resulting from damage to the lymph system
Individuals may be at risk for secondary lymphedema following mastectomy or lumpectomy, radiation therapy, lymph node removal, surgery, infection, or trauma to a limb. Lymphedema can develop months or even years after treatment, and in some cases may never occur. Because there is currently no cure, the goal of therapy is to reduce swelling and maintain long-term control.
Comprehensive Lymphedema Treatment
Our lymphedema therapy program focuses on Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT)—the gold standard of care for managing lymphedema. Treatment typically includes:
-
Manual lymph drainage performed by a specially trained therapist
-
Compression bandaging or garments
-
Therapeutic exercise to promote lymph flow and improve mobility
-
Education on meticulous skin care to reduce infection risk
This comprehensive approach helps decrease swelling, improve comfort and function, and support long-term management.
